“’If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.’ – Vincent Van Gogh. The voice within me was my worst enemy. I would see my emotions as a weakness and I would run and hide from them, essentially from myself, never really going anywhere. Standing still was the only thing that really allowed me to cultivate an end to running. And in this stillness, I was able to see that the feeling of fear itself felt greater than the things I was afraid of. The very thing that made me okay with my emotions was simply letting myself be emotional, exactly what I was so afraid of. From running from my feelings to feeling my feelings to making friends with my feelings, and eventually friends with my whole being, the voice within me is no longer my worst enemy, nor do my emotions make me weak, they only make me human. And my relationship with myself and my emotions that once held hostage my desire for living, is now what waters my will to live back to life each day.”
